There are two factors to removing urine stains and odors the surface of the carpet and deep within the carpet.
Remove surface stains by scrubbing the carpet with a cloth or cleaning brush and a foambased carpet stain remover cleaner.
Stores sell foambased carpet stain removers specifically designed for pet urine stains.
You can also make your own foambased cleaner by vigoursly whisking together 1 teaspoon of liquid hand dishwashing detergent with 1 cup of water, to create a foam.
Use only the foam portion of the mixture to clean the carpet.
Stubborn urine stains may require several cleanings.
Surface cleaning the carpet may make the stain disappear, but odors still remain because urine soaks deep within the carpet.
Neutralize the odor of dog urine stains, by pouring a small amount of white vinegar over the stain.
The vinegar neutralizes the odor and helps remove any remaining portion of the stain.
Use only enough vinegar to saturate the stain, without soaking the carpet.
Older urine stains may require several vinegar treatments to neutralize odors.
It is hard to tell if the urine odor is completely out of the carpet.
Even if the smell of urine is not detectable to you, your dog, who has a stronger sense of smell than you, may still be able to smell it.
The vinegar may completely remove the urine odor and it may not.
If you notice your dog sniffing around the spot you cleaned, the odor probably still remains.
For persistant odor, use a pet enzyme cleaner.
Pet enzyme cleaners are sold in pet stores, cleaning supply stores and grocery stores.
They contain live enzymes that eat urine and other such as feces and blood, and completely get rid of the odor.
Spray enough of the pet enzyme cleaner on the carpet to saturate the stain.
Enzyme cleaners only work when they are wet so lay a piece of plastic wrap over the saturated carpet to keep the enzyme cleaner from drying out.
After 24 hours, remove the saran wrap, blot the carpet with a white towel and let the carpet air dry.
